KBIM constantly encourages its employees to attend training and upgrading courses, including their union’s internationally-respected gas and steam turbine certification courses. Regrettably, millwrighting in Alberta is not a compulsory trade—millwrights don’t need to meet a provincial standard to do the work. We’ve never been happy about this, but it’s a reality we live with.
Regardless of what you think of unions, in Alberta, the fact that we’re unionized is a guarantee of much higher quality workmanship. It can also reduce costs. Local 1460 Alberta Millwrights operates at a higher standard. The Local will not accept members until they have a combination of training and experience that meet what provincial standards should be.
KBIM’s founder was a Local 1460 charter member. His sons, who now operate our company, are members. KBIM is by far the union’s biggest millwright-only employer. The Local has just opened a multi-million-dollar provincial training centre whose centrepiece is a large, contemporary hydrogen compressor donated by Petro-Canada and installed by KBIM.
Many of the union’s members—many of whom work with KBIM—have attended the world-class steam and gas turbine certification course at the union’s International Training Centre in Las Vegas. Our General Manager has taken it, and our Senior Field Superintendent teaches the mandatory prep courses. This course is so good that 2 of the world’s largest Original Equipment Manufacturers send their technical staff to Las Vegas for training. It is offered to members at just $10, including travel.
A stable, productive partnership with the Alberta Millwright Local 1460 is one of the reasons why, for 33 years, KBIM has competed successfully with non-union companies and completed many successful contracts in non-union environments.
That’s more than ample proof of our conviction that KBIM’s highly-trained union millwrights, working in tight teams supervised and managed by millwrights, can work more accurately, more quickly, more safely and with less client supervision and direction—all of which saves our clients both time and money in the long run.
